What is Panto?

"Panto" typically refers to pantomime, a form of theatrical performance that is especially popular in the UK, particularly around the Holiday season. It is a type of musical comedy stage production that combines slapstick humor, fairy-tale or folklore stories, and audience participation.

Dating back to the 1600’s Pantomimes are often family-friendly, featuring exaggerated characters, brightly colored costumes, songs, dance routines, and a good dose of humor that can be both silly and clever. The performances typically include a "principal boy" (often played by a woman) and a "pantomime dame" (often played by a man in drag). It’s a fun, lively experience where the audience is encouraged to shout out responses or even interact with the performers.

About NYC Panto

Running in NYC for the last five years we’ve performed at such storied venues as The Duplex, 54 Below and
Don’t Tell Mama.

Featured in Time Out’s Holiday Roundup, NYC Panto is your new annual
holiday favorite.

Our panto is a strictly adult affair combining the traditional panto with NYC’S legendary cabaret scene. Our panto is made to suit both panto veterans and virgins as the familiar calls and responses are taught to the audience by our fabulous Dame, teaching the virgins and warming up the veterans. We pride ourselves with up to the second social commentary, if there's something happening in the zeitgeist, there’s a joke to be told. If there’s an earworm of a tune rattling around your brain we’ll be parodying it. The essence of our show is inclusivity, all our welcome here, to laugh, sing and celebrate together.

  • "If they invested $25 million into this show instead of that Tammy Faye show on Broadway, they would have recouped their investment and still have a Broadway show!"

  • "...deftly mixing absurd, bawdy, up-to-the-minute topical humor into a deliciously frothy concoction..."

  • "...decidedly adult in spirit. The latest iteration... brings drag queens and stalkers to the tale... Don't be fooled by the curtain time: This is naughty, bawdy stuff."
